Ilianen Manobo Oral Narrative Recordings

Ilianen Manobo Oral Narratives: Samples from the sound archives

Dr Hazel Wrigglesworth, a field researcher with SIL International, was intermittently resident among the Ilianen Manobo of North Cotabato from 1962 to 1995. During that time, at the urging of several gifted professional storytellers, she recorded some of their valuable body of oral literature for future generations of Manobo. Some of those recordings have survived. Unfortunately some irreplacable recorded tapes were lost in a house fire, and now only transcriptions survive. Many of the recordings of Manobo traditional oral narratives have been transcribed and are published in print by Dr Wrigglesworth.

We offer here samples from two of the narratives of Ampatuan Ampalid. You may request to listen to the complete digitized recordings onsite at the SIL Philippines archive in Manila. Contact us.
